South African Undersea Cable to Become Boon for Operators

The now fully operational West African Cable System (WACS) undersea cable is anticipated to be a boon for all operators in the South African market, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.

“South Africa: Undersea Cables Boost Data and Broadband Growth as LTE Prepares to Launch” report offers a precise profile of the country’s telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid’s research in the market. It provides a detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.

The undersea cable system cost around $650 million and brings speeds of 5.12 Tb per second, said Associate Research Analyst, Ronda Zelezny-Green.

The arrival should help the sector meet the growing demands of data usage, and mobile data growth at a CAGR of 19 percent through 2017 to reach a revenue figure of $6.8 billion is projected. The undersea cable system should allow operators to provide enhanced broadband internet services at more affordable rates, she notes.
