South Korean Shipbuilders Keep Lead

South Korean shipbuilders remain on top in terms of global shipbuilding orders, based on Clarkson’s research statistics for February 2015.

The global top five orderbook ranking is lead by Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering’s Okpo Shipyard (7.957 million CGT), Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard (5.026 million CGT),  Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard (4.866 million CGT), Ulsan’s Hyundai Mipo (3.439 million CGT) and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (3.418 million CGT).

The global orderbook intake at the end of February stood at 5,048 units (308.1 million DWT) a slight decline, down about 9% when compared to last year’s figures.

The biggest decline was felt in bulk carrier sector, with Capesize bulk carrier orderbook totaling in 333 ships (66 million DWT), compared with 73.9 million DWT at the end of 2014.

For the first two months this year, the global orderbook reached 330 ships ( 18.9 million DWT ), an annual growth of 10% compared to last year, Clarkson’s data shows.
