Hijos de J. Barreras Inks Contract with Procesa for Tuna Vessel

Galician shipbuilder Hijos de J. Barreras, S.A. announced yesterday the closing of a contract with the Mexican group Procesa for the building of a tuna vessel of 79.5 meters length. The ship will be designed by the shipyard. News were confirmed by the chairman of Barreras, Mr. José García Costas during the Board of directors held in Vigo, the first to be attended by the Mexican group Pemex’s spokespeople after its entry in the shareholding of the group.

García Costas also reported the existence of a letter of intent signed by the joint venture formed by the Mexican Diavaz and the Dutch Oceanteam, for the construction of one multipurpose offshore vessel of 112 meters. If the contract for this second ship is confirmed, it could be signed in the first months of 2014, according to the yard’s planning.

The tuna vessel required by the group Procesa, one of the largest tuna processing companies in the Aztec country, will have an approximate delivery time of 18 months. The design of the vessel is a HJB -1600, one of the models of Vigo’s shipyard for this American type segment. Its 79.5 meters of lenght and 14 meters of beam provide an aboard freezing capacity of up to 1,600 cubic meters.

Mister Carlos Roa, second in charge in Pemex, has also announcied the contract three supply vessels for next year. It follows the expansion politic of the mexican company after the approval of the new mexican energey law. He showed confidence in that there will be another three big vessels in the first quarter of the year 2014.

The offshore unit planned by Diavaz and Oceanteam will be intended for sub-sea construction and accommodation purposes with a capacity to accommodate up to 240 people. Its dimensions will be of 112 meters of lenght and 26 of beam. The vessel will be equipped with a DP3 dynamic positioning system and will also have two offshore cranes on board. The estimated construction period will be about 26 months.

Hijos de J. Barreras, S.A. guarantees with this announcement the return to activity of its slipways after its last delivery for the shipping company Armas in 2011 the last two twin ferries ordered by the Canarian group: ‘Volcán de Tinamar ‘ and ‘ Volcán de Teide ‘ both capable to carry up to 1,200 passengers.

Hijos de J. Barreras, S.A. chairman welcomed the entry of the Mexican group Pemex, through its subsidiary PMI, during the board of directors held in Vigo. He qualified this alliance as a “strategic opportunity for Galician naval sector.” Hijos de J. Barreras, S.A. held a formal ceremony this morning with shareholders and employees. It was also by attended the President of la Xunta, Mr. Alberto Nuñez Feijoo and the Regional Minister of Industry, Francisco Conde , who in recent months participated actively in the negotiations between Galician naval sector and the Mexican government.

García Costas thanked in his speech the “Xunta effort” in support of the naval sector during these years marked by the widespread international crisis and shrinking markets.
