Sri Lanka: Weras Ganga Dredging Project Gets Nod

Cabinet approval has been granted for the implementation of the Weras Ganga Storm Water Drainage and Environment Improvement Project.

The project is executed to mitigate the frequent flooding in Weras Ganga Basin and also to promote sustainable development activities and enhance environment improvement which will promote tourism industry in the relevant areas.

The project involves the dredging of the Weras Ganga as well as improvements to the drainage of the Bolgoda Marsh and the development of the connecting canals. By improving the quality of the water retention areas and waterways, storm water drainage will be improved while the overall beauty and pleasantness of the greater Colombo area will be greatly enhanced.

The Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLR&DC) had formulated the project based on a hydrological study carried out by JICA and SLLR&DC for the preparation of a Master Plan to control flooding in Nugegoda, Rattanapitiya, Borelasgamuwa, Maha Ela and Ratmalana areas.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs.14,227 million and is scheduled to be completed within 4 years.
