Swiber’s anchor handler still aground in Mexico

Swiber Torunn, an anchor handler that ran aground in Mexico last week, has yet to be refloated.

In an email sent to Offshore Energy Today, Swiber, the offshore services provider that owns the vessel has confirmed the incident happened on January 1, 2016.

According to the company’s spokesperson, the Swibber Torrun, while in the inner port anchorage of Dos Bocas, Mexico, encountered very rough weather, high winds and rough sea swell, causing the vessel’s anchor to drag and resulted in the vessel going aground.

While some media reports said the vessel was “already half-submerged” on January 2, the Swiber spokesperson said the vessel “was not submerged in any way.”

The spokesperson said that verification checks confirmed no signs of water ingress and that all 15 crew onboard were safe.

“Swiber is now working with port authorities and internal and external marine experts to plan a safe refloating of this vessel at the earliest opportunity,” the spokesperson said.

While it did not specify when exactly the refloating might take place, the spokesperson said it will happen at the “earliest opportunity”.
