Tanzania: Zanzibar Looking Into Energy Independence through Renewables

Zanzibar is eyeing independence in terms of electricity supply, which it will try to achieve through focusing on renewable sources, as it currently relies on power from Dar es Salaam and Tanga, Tanzania Daily News informs.

Inconsistent power supply of Zanzibar’s islands has led its Government to look into reliable alternative sources that could provide electricity to 1.3 million people living on the islands. Energy resources such as wind, wave and solar have already attracted some foreign investors’ interest.

The Government is eager to find out soon what are the most sustainable options when it comes to exploiting Zanzibar’s energy resources, Vice President Seif Ali Iddi told the Zanzibar House of Representatives during a recent budget session.

“Studies have been going on to find out the most appropriate source of electricity for our islands. We ask the people to be patient as the government is committed on this matter,” Tanzania Daily News quotes Mr Iddi as saying.
