TE SubCom Begins Survey Work on USA and Ireland's Emerald Express Submarine Cable

Emerald Networks, a new undersea fibre optic network provider, and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. Company and an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology, announced that the survey of USA and Ireland territorial waters has commenced.

This is a key milestone for enabling the construction of the Emerald Express Trans-Atlantic Cable System. The network will provide both low-latency and ultra-high bandwidth capacity between New York, Dublin, and London. To achieve the desired ultra-high capacity rates, Emerald Express has been designed to support 100×100 Gbps on each of its four trans-Atlantic fibre pairs.

The Emerald Express cable system final splice is estimated to be completed by the end of 2014. Upon completion it will be the most advanced next generation undersea telecommunications system constructed to date. It is a software-managed, intelligent network that will provide low-latency, utilize sophisticated coherent digital technology, and increased bandwidth. Emerald Express will be comprised of four fibre pairs, designed to carry 100 wavelengths of light on each fibre pair, with each wavelength operating at an initial speed of 100 Gbps, equivalent to 10 Tbps per fibre pair, resulting in 40 Tbps cross-sectional capacity.

Dr. William C. Marra, CEO, Emerald Networks, stated, “Having TE SubCom successfully complete this survey represents an important milestone for our construction. This information is needed so that SubCom can start manufacturing our cable over the winter months. This puts us one step closer to on-time delivery of our pre-sales contracts and our goal to offer the industry leading 100 x 100 Gbps undersea trans-Atlantic network. We are pleased to be working with TE SubCom and look forward to a long-term relationship with the world leader in fiber connectivity.

“It is an honor for TE SubCom to be chosen by Emerald Networks, who has asked for the most technically advanced solution our firm can offer,” said Michael Rieger, vice president, Global Sales, TE SubCom. “The industry-shifting commitment to new trans-Atlantic bandwidth is on the fast track and SubCom is looking forward to working with the Emerald Networks team, where we have worked before, to deliver this unique IT infrastructure project.”
