Transocean Opens Training Center in Macaé, Brazil

The company’s state-of-the-art training center officially opened Tuesday in Macaé, Brazil, an investment that furthers Transocean’s commitment to developing its people, who are helping customers find and develop Brazil’s rich petroleum reserves.

Located in Macaé‘s busiest industrial center, the spacious and modern new center provides the latest in technology and teaching in the offshore drilling business.

“Our people’s passion and commitment to excellence really shines through at this outstanding facility,” said Steven Newman, Transocean Ltd. President and Chief Executive Officer. “It features the most advanced equipment and experienced instructors and staff, so that everyone who comes here will get the most educational benefit.”

Approximately 100 visitors, including leaders from longtime customer Petrobras, attended the opening. They toured the new center’s six classrooms, meeting rooms, state-of-the-art simulators for drilling, well control and crane operations, staff offices, a cafeteria and other facilities.

Estimated demand this year at the training center is more than 200 classes for personnel from Brazil and other Transocean locations worldwide. And for the first time in Brazil, Transocean personnel will be able to take drilling and crane operations competency assessment classes, D-CAP and C-CAP, using simulators onshore, in addition to offshore assessments.

“The SAM Division has already been named one of the Top 150 Places to Work in Brazil, and this facility will help make us an even better place to work,” said outgoing South America Division Managing Director Guilherme Coelho.

For 2013, plans call for the installation of a new cyber-based drilling simulator at the new center to train drillers and assistant drillers who work on the latest-generations of offshore drilling rigs. In addition, the center can host local, third-party training on a commercial basis, to utilize unused space.

“Training is an essential part of what makes Transocean unique, and it is exciting to see us taking the next steps in offshore drilling education,” said incoming SAM Managing Director Ana Zambelli. “This investment is essential to our long-term success in serving our customers.”

The Macaé facility was constructed in just 12 months with zero recordable incidents involving the 100 workers on the project. It is one of four Transocean global training centers along with those in Aberdeen, Houston and Kuala Lumpur.
