Two Workers Killed in Oil Rig Accident in Gulf of Mexico

Two workers died and ten were injured on Tuesday in an accident on board an offshore maintenance rig in the southern Bay of Campeche, Gulf of Mexico, Mexican oil company Pemex informed.

The Troll Solution rig started tilting after a structural fault lead to the collapse of one of the rig’s legs.

Over a 100 workers, 98 employed by Typhon Offshore, operator of the rig, and 3 by Pemex, have been evacuated from the rig.

Pemex said that several support ships were rushed to the scene to evacuate the workers, who were taken to medical facilities for checkups.

The incident occurred while the rig was trying to position itself to carry out maintenance on wells linked to the Caan Alf platform.

Pemex said in a Tweet that it continues responding to the situation on the scene, adding that the oil production has not been affected as the mobile platform is intended for well maintenance.

As informed, there has been no oil spill so far and the rig continues tilting, but has not sunk.
