Union: Crew Member of CSL Spruceglen Dies

A crew member of CSL Spruceglen, a 38,295 dwt bulker operated by Canadian shipowner CSL Group, died while working on board the ship on October 16.

“It is with great sadness that we inform our members that last night, brother Alfred Eshun was killed while working on board the CSL Spruceglen,” the Seafarers International Union of Canada informed.

“The details are limited at this time, but any accident is a tragedy and we ask all members to keep his family and shipmates in your thoughts and prayers.”

Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) confirmed the death of one of its seafarers to World Maritime News.

Based on the limited available information, CSL said that the crew member fell overboard as Spruceglen approached Eisenhower Lock on the St Lawrence River leg of the St Lawrence Seaway, located near Massena, New York, shortly after midnight on October 16, 2018.

“CSL will continue to do its utmost to ensure that operations on all CSL vessels are safe and that the Mr. Eshun’s family and CSL employees are supported in these difficult circumstances,” CSL statement reads.

The 1983-built ship, flying the Canadian flag, was headed from Montreal, Canada to Ashtabula, U.S., when the incident occurred.

CSL and relevant authorities are investigating the incident.
