University of Aberdeen launches new Masters programmes in O&G innovation

The University of Aberdeen will coordinate three new Masters (MSc) programmes in oil and gas innovation across seven Scottish universities.

According to John Scrimgeour, Executive Director of the University’s Aberdeen Institute of Energy, the University of Aberdeen has been selected by Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) to co-ordinate the MSc across the universities.

Showcasing its energy teaching expertise at Offshore Europe conference on Tuesday, the university launched the new Masters programmes, which is a collaboration between the OGIC and Scottish universities.

Among these programmes there is Masters in Oil and Gas Innovation that aims to develop new technologies in exploration, production and decommissioning.

Furthermore, there is MSc in Process Safety Engineering, which will examine the primary technologies, equipment, and operations used in upstream oil and gas processing. The University explains that this programme will expose students to the tools and processes used to identify, assess and manage risk.

As the third new programme, the university announces a part-time MS in Human Factors, aimed at improving safety and efficiency in the workplace by developing an understanding of key human factors concepts, methods of investigation and intervention development.

According to a statement by the univeristy, besides running a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the University also offers part-time, distance learning and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses.

John Scrimgeour said: “Our new Masters courses are designed to meet the needs of the oil and gas sector, which the University has close links with through the various industry advisory boards that provide professional guidance on our energy-related programmes.”

“At this challenging time for the industry there is an acute need for innovation, and that is why I’m delighted that the University has been selected by OGIC to co-ordinate the MSc in Oil and Gas Innovation across seven Scottish universities, which is testament to our position as a University at the forefront of energy-related teaching and research.”

“Last year we launched our MSc in Petroleum Engineering, again in response to demand from industry, and this has proved hugely successful with close to 50 students enrolled in its first year.”

“We will be holding an event on our stand today that will celebrate the success of this programme, and we are confident that our new Masters courses will prove equally as successful in attracting and inspiring the next generation of energy sector professionals.”
