Update: Car Carrier Berths at Southampton after Fire

The US-flagged car carrier Honor was berthed at the Port of Southampton on February 24 after it caught fire in the English Channel earlier that day. The ship refilled its CO2 system and plans to proceed to anchorage on February 27, ARC informed.

American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier (ARC), the vessel’s owner, said that any possible cargo or vessel damage will not be assessed until the authorities grant permission to access the impacted spaces. The permission is not expected to be granted until the middle of the week.

The fire broke out while the 49,814 gross ton Honor was en route to Baltimore from Southampton. The ship’s fixed firefighting systems were used to attack the fire and the cargo space was sealed.

No injuries to the crew were reported, according to ARC.

The ship was operating under its own power after the fire was extinguished.

“ARC has made all the proper notifications to the relevant authorities and will have further updates as the situation evolves. The current focus is on making sure the ship and crew are safe and on investigating the cause of incident,” the company added.
