Update: Mariner that Fell Overboard from Fednav’s Bulker Alive and Well

The seafarer that fell overboard from Fednav’s laker last week is in good health and was able to resume his duties on board Federal Champlain, Fednav told World Maritime News.

The incident occurred while Federal Champlain was moored at Thunder Bay and loading cargo.

During the operation, an officer used the draft ladder to read the vessel’s draft marks.

As informed by the Canadian dry bulk shipping company, he was wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and the operation followed the safety management system protocol.

“Towards the end of the operation, the seafarer lost his strengths and gradually let himself slid into the water, where he was immediately picked up by a boat.  As a precautionary measure he was then given medical treatment and rest, before he was declared fit for duty by a medical professional,” a company statement reads.

Fednav said that a detailed investigation into the incident was carried out.

“The appropriate conclusions have been drawn to further improve the safety of our operations and a lesson to be learned has been promulgated to the entire fleet,” the statement further reads.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Laker, featuring 34,600 dwt, left Quebec on December 16th and is bound for Kristiansand, Norway, according to its latest AIS data.

The ship was built in 2016 and is part of Fednav’s fleet of about 100 bulk carriers trading worldwide, 58 of which are owned.
