USCG Medevacs Unconscious Crewman from Bulk Carrier

The US Coast Guard (USCG) medevaced an unconscious crew member of a bulk carrier anchored in Cape Charles, Virginia, on August 2, 2018.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads were notified on Thursday by a representative of the Nord Chesapeake, a 656-foot Panamanian vessel, that the 60-year-old man was unconscious.

An MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew was dispatched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Once on-scene, the aircrew hoisted the man aboard and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical personnel at Norfolk Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.

“Despite the inclement weather throughout the area, our Air Station Elizabeth City personnel were able to quickly medevac the crew member,” Petty Officer 1st Class Rachel Davis, operations unit watchstander at Sector Hampton Roads, said.

The 60,447 dwt Nord Chesapeake, operated by Japan-based Nissen Kaiun, is still anchored off Cape Charles, according to the vessel’s AIS data provided by MarineTraffic.
