Video: Cabrera Wreck Emerges from the Water

The wreck of the cargo vessel Cabrera, which grounded and sank off the Greek island of Andros in late December 2016, was removed from the water ten months after the incident.

Dutch salvage company SMIT Salvage and its Greek partner Megatugs were sent to remove the oil from the vessel and recover a part of the cargo. The ship, which grounded on a steep rocky coast, broke into pieces and sank to a depth of 34 meters.

The two companies were also awarded the follow-up contract for the removal of the stern including the accommodation from the seabed as well as remaining cargo.

The Boskalis floating sheerleg crane Taklift 4 was used for this wreck removal operation.

At the time of the incident, there were nine crewmembers aboard the 2007-built vessel. There were no reports of injuries and the crew, consisting of four Philippine, three Polish, one Ukrainian and one Lithuanian national, was safely evacuated after the grounding.
