VIDEO Fire Breaks Out on Scarabeo 5 Rig in Keppel Verolme Yard

A fire broke out this morning on the Scarabeo 5 rig in the Keppel Verolme yard in the Netherlands.

According to reports, three persons have been injured. The fire was caused by a gas leak in the drilling rig, VG.no reports.

In an e-mail sent to Offshore Energy Today, Keppel said that only one person has been injured:

“We can confirm that a fire broke out in a welder shop as a result of hot work on board the Scarabeo 5 semi at Keppel Verolme. The fire is under control and we understand there is one person with minor injuries.”

The rig, hired by Statoil, has been placed at the Keppel Verolme yard for overhaul of the thrusters, all anchor winches, top drive upgrade and various modifications and repairs.

Scarabeo 5, owned by Italy’s drilling contractor Saipem, was supposed to be delivered to Statoil this month, but the delivery date now seems uncertain.

 UPDATE-1

Keppel has confirmed in an e-mail that two more persons (three in total) have been injured. Keppel described the injuries as “very minor”.
