Video: first small-scale LNG reload in Lithuania

The first small-scale LNG reload operation in Lithuania took place earlier this month at the Klaipedos Nafta-operated liquefied natural gas terminal in the port of Klaipeda. 

On January 2, the Skangas-chartered Coral Energy small-scale LNG carrier, Coral Energy, loaded 15,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas from the FSRU Independence, serving as Lithuania’s import terminal.

It was the first commercial small-scale LNG reload operation in the port, marking the start of the continuous reload service from the FSRu for the small-scale LNG market.

The operation was also the first under a contract signed between Statoil of Norway, as the LNG supplier and the two Lithuanian natural gas trading companies Litgas and Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas, both part of Lietuvos Energija that aims to boost the development of the small-scale LNG market in the Baltic region.

According to Litgas, the Lithuanian LNG terminal is currently the only facility in the Baltic Sea that can reload liquefied natural gas to smaller LNG carriers.

Prior to the reload operation, which can be viewed in the video, Klaipedos Nafta carried out a small study on the technical feasibility and risk assessment of reloading LNG on small-scale carriers, while Höegh LNG, performed a feasibility study on the compatibility of Coral Energy and the terminal.

Tadas Matulionis, KN LNG terminal director said that the FSRU terminal for the first time operates not only in multi-user but also in multi-service mode. Klaipedos Nafta is expanding its LNG infrastructure to further exploit the terminal.

“This is another step towards creating a complex LNG distribution station in Klaipėda. The next stage of developing the LNG infrastructure, which we plan to start in the summer when the LNG distribution station is put into operation, will involve the loading of LNG onto land transport vehicles,” Matulionis said.
