SMI to Represent Van der Velden's Solutions at WorkBoat Show in New Orleans

Dedicated to providing the best heavy duty marine equipment available, SMI represents Van der Velden® Marine Systems, renowned for providing the best rudder solutions. SMI has served and supported customers buying Van der Velden manoeuvring systems for more than 22 years. At this year’s International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, the company’s specialists will focus on inland shipping manoeuvring solutions as well as workboat applications.

With over 6,000 successful installations worldwide today, Van der Velden has built up enormous experience with tailor-made solutions that meet specific requirements. Exhibition visitors are invited to come to visit the stand of Ships Machinery International (SMI) at the International Workboat Show, which will be held from 5 to 7 December at the Morial Convention Centre in New Orleans.

Tailor-made solutions for inland shipping

For inland shipping vessels, the Van der Velden Hydro Dynamic profile rudders ensure the best manoeuvring performance. These HD rudders have an asymmetrical profile for high efficiency and are always applied in pairs. Regardless of the configuration, an excellent manoeuvring performance, maintenance-friendly design and long lifespan is assured.

Van der Velden also provides sturdy, asymmetric steering gear especially developed for its HD rudder systems, type 2 DWK 6080 and 4 DWKK 6080. With this steering gear, the rudders have a rudder angle of 60° and 80° respectively, providing optimal slipstream guidance.

For the best possible integration with the rudders and steering gear, and to maximise onboard safety, Van der Velden engineered the fully equipped control panels type SP 2700. This steering system is developed with the latest technologies and has three built-in options, offering a choice between main or pilot steering or directly linked emergency steering. Alarms are indicated directly on the SP2700 bridge panel. A unique characteristic of the SP 2700 is its software, which simplifies and improves the start-up process, maintenance and services.

Tailor-made solutions for oceangoing vessels

Oceangoing vessels such as AHTS’s and tugs can also rely on Van der Velden for manoeuvring systems optimised to the ship’s operational profile. This ensures smooth manoeuvring, contributes to lower fuel costs and noise & vibration levels, and reduces cavitation and maintenance costs.

A recent example is the contract to deliver 4 x 2 Van der Velden MASTER Fishtail rudders to Crowley’s Ocean tug series, built at Bollinger shipyard. The MASTER rudder has no moving parts and the fishtail-shaped trailing edge ensures efficiency up to a rudder angle of 70°. The combination of this angle with upper and lower end plates allows for a high lift – exactly the type of manoeuvring solution required by these tugs. In addition, the rudders have a robust and simple design that contributes to low maintenance costs and a long lifespan.
