India: Pipavav Shipyard Signs MoU with Babcock to Work on Aircraft Carrier Plan

 

Pipavav Shipyard has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Babcock Group, UK to work together to build next generation proposed aircraft carrier acquisition plan for the Indian Nevy.

Baccock group is the UK`s naval support business and provides a unique role in servicing the Royal Navy and ministry of defence. Pipavav shipyard is the only shipyard in India which can make, maintain and dry dock very large size of aircraft carriers for the Nevy for which it has the very large dry dock and most medern production facilities which are already in place.

This is an important milestone in Pipavav Shipyard`s efforts to become a major player in the defence sector. This event is likely to eliminate necessity to import large battle ships such as aircraft carrier in the future.

Covering over 200 hectares with approximately 720 m of sea front and 685 m of outfit quay, PSL is the largest shipyard in India. It has one of the largest drydock in the world. Two Goliath cranes of 600 T capacity each, which service the drydock and the adjoining pre-erection berth, enabling PSL to handle up to 1200 T pre-outfitted ship blocks. A host of other technologically advanced infrastructure and use of modern shipbuilding processes, including modular construction and line heating technique, make PSL one of the most modern shipyards in the world.

Babcock is the UK’s leading naval support business and has a unique role supporting the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence. Key activities include base porting, refitting, refuelling and decommissioning submarines; maintaining and refitting warships, building the next generation aircraft carriers, managing naval bases and providing equipment support on behalf of the UK Government.
