Ferry Crewman Dies off Montenegro

One sailor has died and three had to be hospitalized following a suspected fume poisoning on board the Greek ferry Horizon late Friday near the Montenegro’s Adriatic coast.

The deceased sailor is said to be from Sri Lanka, whereas the three remaining crew members of the ferry are reported to be from Egypt and India.

Two sailors remain in life-threatening condition, according to doctors at the general hospital in the coastal town of Meljine where the sailors were taken for treatment.

Cypriot-flagged Horizon was heading to a nearby Montenegrin shipyard for repairs prior to the incident.

Initial reports indicate that the fumes were most probably emitted while the crew was cleaning the vessel’s tanks in preparation for the ship to enter the repair yard in Bijela.

The local police is investigating the incident.
