USA: Environmental Groups Oppose Port Ambrose LNG Project

Environmental Groups led by The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Clean Ocean Action submitted letters with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG ) and the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), regarding the environmental impact of the Port Ambrose LNG import terminal.

Liberty Natural Gas LLC proposes to construct, own and operate  the Port Ambrose deepwater port and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the New York Bight approximately 17 nautical miles southeast of Jones Beach, New York and 24 nautical miles east of Long Branch, New Jersey.

NRDC’s comments focus on apparent conflicts posed by the Port Ambrose LNG project to an offshore wind electricity project proposed for the same ocean area by the New York Power Authority (NYPA), Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and Consolidated Edison.

NRDC’s comments also discuss other potential environmental impacts that should be considered in the scoping process, as well as the appropriate scope for the alternatives analysis.

The USCG and the MARAD are now in the scoping period and invite public comments relating to the scope of the EIS.
