American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) joined forces with Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) on a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) design concept.

ABS said it has provided safety guidance and advice on regulatory compliance throughout concept development.

The smaller 25,000 cubic meter design concept incorporates four type C cargo tanks with the aim to simplify the transfer of gas to the storage terminal.

Speaking of the partnership with ABS, HHIC’s managing director Moon-Tae Yoon, said it has proved the feasibility of the concept and enabled the company to understand the safety implications throughout the development of the design.

Classification society’s vice president for global gas solutions, Patrick Janssens added that FSRUs are a flexible gas delivery solution for the industry that is looking for new options to deliver the gas to new and expanding markets.
