Balearia confirms LNG ferry order

Spanish shipping company Baleària said it has signed a deal with Shipyard Construcciones Navales del Norte – LaNaval, for the construction of two LNG-powered ferries.

This deal is a confirmation of the previously announced agreement between the two companies in September last year.

According to a statement released by Baleària last week, the company will invest EUR 175 million to build the first LNG-powered ferry, with an option in the coming months to build a sister ship. The first ferry is expected to be operational in 2019.

The new ship will be among the largest ferries in the world, with a length of 232 meters and a beam of 30 meters, besides being the first passenger ferry powered by LNG in the Mediterranean, according to the statement.

The ferry will feature three dual-fuel engines that will be capable of running on natural gas or diesel oil.
