Buoys to Beacons for a Safer Bay (Australia)

Buoys to Beacons for a Safer Bay

Larger, more visible beacons will soon replace small buoys in the port channels, improving visibility and making Port Phillip Bay a safer place for all users.

The Bay is a popular recreational space for many Melburnians – but it is also the sea highway leading to Australia’s busiest port.

The new beacons will be driven into the seabed, providing fixed markers of the channel boundary.

Keeping small fishing boats and large ships apart is a priority for the Port, through maintaining and improving channel markers and promotions like the ‘Steer Clear’ campaign.

Save navigation means a safe and healthy Bay, and a safe environment for the thousands of Victorian’s who enjoy all the Bay has to offer” said Port of Melbourne Harbour Master, Gary Wilson.
