Bureau Veritas to class Yamal LNG carriers

Bureau Veritas revealed it will class a series of fifteen LNG carriers that will serve the Novatek-operated Yamal LNG project in the Russian Arctic.

Vessels currently under construction in Korea’s DSME yard will have ice breaking capability, will transport LNG from the 16.5 mtpa facility, Bureau Veritas said in a statement.

Sovcomflot, MOL, Teekay and Dynagas have one, three, six and five vessels respectively, and all vessels are scheduled for delivery over the next four years.

The 300 m long vessels will carry 172,000 cbm LNG in four membrane tanks and will be dual-classed with the Russian Register.

The ships will be built to Russian Register Arc7, equivalent to between Polar Class 3 and 4 for Bureau Veritas rules and able to operate in conditions with ice thickness of 2.5 meters and in -45°C ambient temperature, while the equipment should be able to work at -52°C, BV added.
