Cable Layer Ile de Sein Delayed After Fire in Hawaii

A cable-laying vessel ‘Ile de Sein’ caught fire on May 4 while it was docked in Honolulu, Hawaii.

According to reports, the fire started from the generators compartment. Namely, fire works inflamed cables in one of the diesel generators and fire extended to the two vessel.

The fire broke out at around 19:30, after which local fire teams tackled the blazes and managed to extinguish the fire some three hours later.

Furthermore, reports say that there was no damage to the main engine and propulsion system.

The 140 meters long cable layer will be held up for the repair and while the local authorities conduct an investigation to try and find th cause of the accident.

The crew was evacuated and no serious injuries were reported.

The vessel, built and launched in 2002 at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, South Korea, is operated by Alda Marine, a joint venture between Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks.
