Canada: Vancouver Based Shipping Operators Launch Operation Clean-up

A cleaner, safer more environment-friendly supply chain is the aim of a burgeoning cluster of shipping operators based around the Canadian port of Vancouver, British Columbia.

One of them, containership operator Seaspan Ship Management recently launched a SAVER (Seaspan Action on Vessel Energy Reduction) scheme. A group of 10,000 teu newbuilds are being designed and built to SAVER specifications to ensure they operate at maximum fuel efficiency.

“Anyone can build a big ship today, but we think it’s about optimisation ¬– and that’s not so easy. We might need to really speed up between Rotterdam and Hamburg but then become a slow boat back to China,” said Peter Curtis, VP of Seaspan Ship Management.

Meanwhile Vancouver-based tanker operator, Teekay Corporation, has led a number of anti-emissions initiatives, notably in the North Sea where the company has used advanced techniques to reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions.

Another Vancouver-based company, BC Ferries, one of the world’s largest ferry operators, sees LNG as fuel as its personal remedy for a cleaner future. The company is planning a range of LNG-powered ferries to add to its 35-vessel fleet.
