China Okays Major Tianjin Port Expansion

Chinese Government has approved the expansion of the customs service and international trade in the port of Tianjin, The China Daily reports.

The world’s fourth busiest port in terms of cargo throughput will increase its water area open to the world by 1,120 sq km, to cover 1,590 sq km.

The plan for the expansion of the largest northern China’s port also includes construction of 71 new berths, bringing the overall number of berths to 146.

“To achieve effective and convenient opening up, coordination is needed between government departments and port authorities in customs services,” the Tianjin Port Service Office official said.

Located on the Bohai Sea, Tianjin Port is connected via trade with over 500 ports in 180 countries worldwide, with its cargo throughput exceeding 500 million tonnes in 2013.

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan Port and Port of Shanghai, as well as the Port of Singapore, are the only ports in the world exceeding the Port of Tianjin’s cargo throughput volume.
