Chinese firm introduces 480 W floating solar module for offshore use

China-based GCL System Integration (GCLSI), a subsidiary of the GCL Group, has developed a new floating photovoltaic (PV) module designed for offshore solar applications. The NT10/60GT module was produced in collaboration with the Norwegian company Ocean Sun.

The module is rated at 480 W and built to withstand the conditions of marine environments, including high humidity, corrosion, and wave impact. It features GCL’s proprietary IP68-rated junction box with four-layer waterproof protection, mounted on the sun-facing side and thermally isolated from seawater by a diaphragm that enables heat dissipation and limits thermal losses.

The module exceeds IEC standards, particularly in potential induced degradation (PID) resistance, and holds certification from TÜV Rheinland for use in marine PV systems.

The NT10/60GT is built on Ocean Sun’s floating platform, using a flexible membrane and prefabricated rail system. GCL reports that this setup improves heat dissipation through direct seawater contact and enhances energy conversion efficiency by over 10%.

Electrical output under standard test conditions ranges between 460 W and 490 W, with a peak efficiency of 21.78%. The module supports a system voltage of up to 1,500 V and uses MC4 connectors. It is also said to include a dual-glass structure, anodized aluminum alloy frame, and is rated for high wind and snow loads.

In 2022, GCLSI provided solar modules for Ocean Sun’s floating solar project in Albania, which will be expanded to 2 MWp by the end of the year.

In February, Singapore-based Canopy Power and Ocean Sun formed a strategic partnership to deploy floating solar technology in Australia, aiming to accelerate renewable energy solutions while addressing land and water scarcity challenges.
