Danish Kalundborg Port Eyes Expansion

Danish port of Kalundborg has revealed plans to commence the construction of 330,000 extra square metres with 500 metres of dock and 15 metres of water depth next year in an effort to increase the feeder and container traffic, the port said.

Under the expansion project on the south side of Kalundborg Port, the port will invest EUR 26 million (USD 29.3 million) to expand its existing space of 800.000 square metres.

The port said that a part of the plan is to move the existing container terminal from the present dock area to the new port area, to be called Ny Vesthavn.

Some 270,000 square metres of the expanded area will be made available for port-using companies, while the remaining 60,000 square metres will be used for dock, roads, and parking facilities, according to the port.

Port of Kalundborg is set to launch the building project in the summer of 2017, and expects the new port area to be fully functional from the fall of 2018.

“Deep water is an important future issue, and we want to invest in the future. But we have run out of space for port-using companies to establish themselves. In order to fulfill the enormous growth potential of the port and the area we will now expand with more square metres and water depth enabling new companies to settle as well as securing the port and the surrounding business cluster to keep contributing actively to further development,” the port’s CEO, Bent Rasmussen, said.
