Deep Ocean Opens Subsea Engineering Office in Trondheim, Norway

Subsea services company Deep Ocean is experiencing great success as a leading provider of subsea services to the oil and gas operators. For years the company had Haugesund as the base for its subsea business in Norway. Now they are establishing a subsea engineering department in Trondheim, Norway.

There are several reasons that Trondheim is an attractive city to us. There is a very strong technology cluster in the city, and the avilability of highly trained personnel. Strategically, this is a sensible location for us, and we also bring something new to the environment of the city through our complete subsea service package, says Sveinung Soma, Engineering Manager at DeepOcean AS.

Opportunities in Trondheim

Deep Ocean is currently the leading provider of remotely operated (ROV) maintenance of subsea installations in the North Sea region. The company has over 1000 employees in branches all over the world, and the largest department isin Haugesund where success started in 1999. The company is still small enough that everyone feels they are contributing to the success, while it is large enough to offer excellent career opportunities. Generally speaking the the arrow points straight up in the subsea business, and establishing in Trondheim will create many opportunities for us. Especially since oil exploration on the Norwegian shelf is moving ever further north. We will first establish the engineering department, and the intention is that this will eventually perform complete projects under their own roof, says Soma.

Initially there are 20 engineers and civil engineers who will be employed to Trondheim department. They will work closely with the head office in Haugesund. The focus now is to recruit the right personnel. Continuous improvement is the key to success.

– It is important for us that the department in Trondheim will be incorporated into the company in general. They should be included and complementary part of the Deep Ocean team. Those who are employed will play a major role in shaping the way forward for the city office. We are looking for both graduates and experienced professionals, who work together to establish a strong subsea environment in Trondheim, says Soma.

He points out that it would also be important to establish cooperation with strong technology environment that NTNU, University College of Sør-Trøndelag, SINTEF and Marintek.

– This will make our offshore operations even stronger, so to get closer to these operators will be very positive. Soma says that office in Trondheim is going to open in the first quarter of 2013.

Client list includes key players in Norway as Statoil, BP, Total, GDF Suez, Gassco, ConocoPhillips and Talisman. With operations in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Holland and Singapore’s Deep Ocean become an international workplace. Soma is no doubt that the department in Trondheim now will make the company even stronger set of national and international competition in the future.

– Trondheim is a long term commitment for us and I have no doubt that opportunities will open up as people are in place there, says the leader of Deep Ocean Engineering’s Department.
