Denmark: Hydrogen can now be traded and marketed as green energy

Regulation & Policy

A new executive order has come into force on 1 July 2023 in Denmark that makes it possible to issue guarantees of origin for hydrogen, meaning that PtX actors can now market and show that they trade in green hydrogen and use green hydrogen in their processes.

According to Danish Energy Agency, in the past, it has only been possible to obtain guarantees of origin for electricity, gas and heat, which means that it is only in these areas that it has been possible for energy companies to show that they traded in green energy.

Now, it will be possible to issue guarantees of origin for hydrogen, which document that a given quantity of hydrogen has been produced with renewable energy sources.

PtX players are thus given the opportunity to point out that they supply green hydrogen, while companies and consumers can generally say that they use green hydrogen.

The agency noted that the path towards a green society must, among other things, be through indirect electrification via Power-to-X (PtX) as this technology makes it possible to produce fuels and chemicals that can replace fossil products in a number of hard-to-abate sectors, such as shipping, aviation, agriculture, parts of industry and parts of heavy road transport.

Without the transformation of these sectors, Denmark is considered unable to achieve the long-term goal of climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest, the Danish Energy Agency pointed out, adding that the crucial thing is that the hydrogen used in the PtX processes is produced with renewable energy sources, which can now be guaranteed with guarantees of origin for hydrogen.
