Egypt’s Port of Damietta Hosts CMA CGM’s Giant

The port of Damietta, Egypt welcomed the giant containership CMA CGM Lyra of 13,000 TEU capacity on Tuesday last week.

This is the first time that such a vessel has berthed in the port, proving the port’s ability to host ships of such magnitude.

As explained by Mr Rafat Alghitany, General Manager of Traffic in Damietta port, the vessel was carrying 5000 TEU on board and features 366m X 45m with a draft of 13.40 m.

He said that the pilotage, towage and anchorage operations have been performed using new tractors tugs of DPA maritime service fleet, adding that 2 new tugs are expected to go in the maritime services fleet next month.

The ship called at Damietta on its way to the Port of Salalah.

Damietta port, one of the oldest ports in Egypt since pharaohs’ time, is situated 8.5 km west of the Nile river of Damietta branch westward Ras El-Bar, and it is 70 km away from Port Said.
