EU to Launch Shipping Emissions Reduction Plan

EU to Launch Shipping Emissions Reduction Plan

The EU Commission keeps insisting on a more comprehensive approach towards cutting shipping emissions, seeing the IMO’s decision from last year to introduce energy efficiency measures for the design of new ships from 2015 as inefficient.

“Discussions about further global measures are ongoing at IMO level, but we need intermediary steps to quickly deliver emissions reductions, such as energy efficiency measures also for existing ships,” Reuters cites the Commission as saying in a statement.

The EU Commission is tabling various options such as setting up a monitoring, reporting and verification system of emissions based on fuel consumption.

The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee is expected to tackle energy efficiency issues in greater depth at this week’s meeting in London.
