Ferus Smit delivers second LNG-powered cement carrier

Ferus Smit, the Dutch shipbuilder on Thursday said the second LNG-powered cement tanker, M.V. Ireland has been delivered to its owner JT cement.

The vessel is the second in a series of two cement carrier newbuilds for the joint venture JT cement, in which Erik Thun AB cooperates with KG Jebsen Cement from Norway.

In its statement, Ferus Smit said the delivery was preceded by an “extensive programme of trials and tests in which the proper working and safety of all systems was verified”.

Following the delivery, the vessel left the harbour of Delfzijl on its first commercial voyage.

In December 2015, Ferus Smit delivered the first vessel, the 110 meter-long M.V. Greenland to JT cement following the completion of a trials and tests program.

The two tankers are the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull, Ferus Smit said.
