Finland: The Switch to Use PM Technology in Marine Business

The Switch to Use PM Technology in Marine Business

Permanent magnet (PM) technology has some clear benefits also for marine applications. Since fuel prices have gone up by 30% in only 2 years and freight rates have remained at about the same level for the past 10 years, energy savings has become hot topic in shipbuilding.

By using PM technology just in shaft generator systems alone, one can save 15%, which equals EUR 400,000–800,000 per year. PM technology is not only energy efficient, but it enables machines to be really compact in size.

The Switch way of working in marine means offering flexibility and deep collaboration to OEMs. The company also offers its popular full-power converter (FPC) series for these applications.

Mika Koli joined The Switch to develop the marine business. He brings seven years of work experience in this industry.

“PM machines and FPCs have great benefits, but they are not widely used in marine applications yet. I am excited to start that technology revolution in this segment like The Switch has done in wind power,” Mika says.
