Höegh Seoul First to Call at Indira Gandhi Container Terminal in Mumbai

The Indira Gandhi Container Terminal (ICT) in Mumbai officially opened up for Ro/Ro operations on July 18, receiving its first vessel – the car carrier Höegh Seoul, operated by Norway-based Höegh Autoliners – two days later.

Höegh Autoliners says the company worked for nearly two years to receive an approval to use the ICT for Ro/Ro operations.

In late November last year, Höegh Delhi made a first trial shipment at the terminal and now the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has allowed ICT to start the Ro/Ro operations for one year, with an option for extension.

“The terminal offers state of the art facilities, matching other international Ro/Ro terminals and we can expect minimum berthing delays and faster turnaround times than otherwise offered in India,” said Karolath Gopinath, Höegh’s Head of Indian Sub-Continent Area.

Höegh has also announced a new US West Coast-East Asia service, offering direct sailings from Port Hueneme, California to major destinations in Japan, South Korea and China, starting from August.

In addition, transshipment options will be available for discharge ports in South East Asia, Africa, Middle East and Europe. The first vessel to load outbound cargo in Port Hueneme is Höegh Sydney scheduled to call on August 20.
