Möbius AG invests in new dredgers

New Vessels – August 28, 2008

Maritime Journal reports that Hamburg-based hydraulic engineering and port construction company Möbius AG is poised to expand its activities by investing millions of Euros in the construction of two new trailing suction hopper dredgers.

The new dredgers being built for Mobius will have hopper capacities of 5,500m3.

Maritime Journal said the firm, in which Austria’s STRABAG holds a major share, said the move was in response to ‘the worldwide rise in the demand for floating dredger capacities and an attempt to boost international competitiveness’.

A contract for the two newbuildings was signed with German shipyard J J Sietas.

The vessels are for delivery Autumn 2010 and Spring 2011.

The report said the new dredgers will each have a volume of 5,550m3 and be suitable for deepening and maintaining shipping channels, port dredging and land reclamation.

Möbius said they were a new Type 180 dredger and would be “very innovative.”
