PORTUNUS PORT SPARES & SERVICES

DP World Aden has appointed Portunus to undertake refurbishment of four RTG cranes. In a region teaming with highly competitive world class container terminal facilities, vying for international business, DP World Aden seeks to achieve unrivalled economies of efficiency through timely and adequate investment in their handling equipment. Portunus began the refurbishment work began with preliminary inspection to ascertain the scope and depth of the work required, followed by careful dismounting and disassembly of key components to be carried back to the Portunus workshop in Turkey for further checks and tests. This led to the undertaking of necessary repairs, reconditioning and replacing of parts and modifying and upgrading of systems and components. Once complete, they remounted and reassembled them, returned and reinstalled them prior to completion tests and commissioning.

Onder Turker from Portunus said, “This refurbishment programme will bring these cranes in line with recent innovations and technical developments in the industry, making them fit for now and the future”. He further added, “We have seen a increase in crane refurbishment and upgrades as well as crane repairs. Most terminals today have neither the facilities nor the personnel to undertake such level of work and look to dedicated providers such as us for this service. This is because in areas such as electronics, specialised personnel fully appreciate what is required and moreso, it seems the days when a traditional electrician could repair a crane control system are long gone”. Portunus has accumulated years of experience in such undertakings and have become very active in this sector and see continued demand for some time to come.

Onder further explained, “There are many benefits to refurbishing which our customers want to take advantage of and the obvious one is cost savings. This helps those who need to raise their equipment capacity by allowing them the ability to deliver quality service to customers whilst exercising a level of capital prudence in this current economic climate. The other is maximising equipment uptime. This increases equipment availability through greater reliability and performance, which translates to higher levels of productivity. It becomes easier to see why many of our customers have embarked on this approach with many more who continue to follow”
