Seadrill’s latest newbuild rig has commenced its six-year contract with Devon Energy in the US Gulf of Mexico after completing final acceptance tests.

Norway’s Seadrill said the new semi-submersible which was delivered from the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore at the end of March underwent final commissioning and acceptance tests before commencing the contract.

And the rig’s start-up has been described as a milestone by Seadrill chief executive Alf Thorkildsen, who said: “After several months in transit from Singapore, we are excited to have started our first deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico. This is an important milestone for our company as West Sirius is the first out of eight deepwater units to be delivered this year.”
