China major ports Jan-April container throughput up 22.1 pct yr-on-yr

China’s major ports handled 26.94 mln twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in the first four months of 2006, up 22.1 pct year-on-year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Communications. Cargo turnover rose 16.4 pct year-on-year to 1.41 bln tons during the January-April period, with shipments for export and import up 14.6 pct at 493.51 mln tons. In April, container throughput via the ports stood at 7.36 mln TEUs, up from 6.07 mln a year earlier while cargo turnover increased to 375.73 mln tons from 320.12 mln.
