New Box-ship

Hamburg, 10 June 2008. Today the RIO DE JANEIRO was christened at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo (Korea). After the “Rio de la Plata” she is the second newbuilding of a series of six identical vessels, each with a slot capacity of 5,900 TEU. This makes the “Rio” class ships the largest container vessels in the history of Hamburg Süd.

Sponsor of the RIO DE JANEIRO is Teresa Oetker, daughter of Dr. h.c. August Oetker, partner of Dr. August Oetker KG and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Hamburg Süd.

Following her delivery on 12 June 2008, the RIO DE JANEIRO will be initially phased into Hamburg Süd’s Asia – South America East Coast Service, before being deployed on the shipping group’s Europe – South America East Coast route in the autumn. The “Rio” class ships will then gradually replace the “Monte” vessels, which are to be deployed in the trades between Asia and South America East Coast.
