Fjord Line investigates LNG

Fjord Line Denmark A/S has decided to carry out a feasibility study for the purpose of using LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) as fuel for the two ferry newbuildings, which will be delivered from Bergen Group Fosen in 2012. The study is backed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Norway, Fjord Line Denmark is now seeking financial support from the EU in order to launch the project. The switch to LNG will reduce the CO2 emissions by around 25 per cent, while NOx emissions will be reduced by around 90 per cent. The LNG project has a price tag of around DKK 10 million. LNG, however, requires considerably larger tanks than conventional fuel in order to give the ferries the same range.
