Huawei Marine Starts Manufacturing of Far East Submarine System
Huawei Marine Networks Co. Ltd. (Huawei Marine), a global submarine cable networks provider, has started manufacturing the cable for the Far East submarine system and will also shortly start manufacturing other wet plant for this system.
This is a direct result of the turnkey system design and development contract Huawei Marine and Rostelecom, Russia’s national telecommunications operator, signed in June 2014. This multi-million dollar investment will enhance communications for the Far East region of Russia and provide high-capacity connectivity across the Sea of Okhotsk.
The innovative slimline repeatered system will be deployed in two segments, linking Okha in Sakhalin Island with Ola in Magadan and Ust-Bolsheretsk in Kamchatka which currently relies on satellite infrastructure. The combined system length exceeds 1,900km. Utilising Huawei Marine’s 100 Gbps technology which features 2nd Soft-Decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC), each segment of the Far East Submarine Cable System will have an initial 2-fiber pairs lit, designed to have a capacity of 1.6 Tbps. The project is due for completion Q4, 2015. At this point, traffic will be migrated from the existing satellite infrastructure to provide reliable low-latency connectivity to service the region’s growing traffic demands.
“Our innovative product portfolio and leading edge transmission technology will help Rostelecom stimulate opportunities for economic, cultural and educational activities in this region,” said Mr. Ma Yanfeng, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Huawei Marine. He added “This project is further evidence of the confidence major network operators have in Huawei Marine’s capabilities to design and deploy challenging subsea transmission infrastructure.”
