Icebreaker Sets Ferry Free off Canada

A Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker escorted the MV Highlanders ferry and its 190 passengers to Newfoundland’s Port Aux Basques, after the vessel had been trapped in ice off Cape Breton for nearly 24 hours, Canada’s daily CBC News reports.

Just after 8 pm local time Monday the Coast Guard was alerted that a passenger ship became stuck, and sent out the Louis S. St-Laurent icebreaker which arrived on scene the next day.

The ferry was on its way from Sydney to Port Aux Basques, where the passengers disembarked Tuesday.
