Ichthys LNG Project Supports Open Education, Australia

On Tuesday in Tokyo, Chief Minister of the Northern Terithory Adam Giles, INPEX Chairman Naoki Kuroda and Education Minister Peter Chandler announced INPEX’s financial support for a new purpose-built Northern Territory Open Education Centre (NTOEC) facility.

The announcement of the construction of the purpose-built $14.6 million NTOEC facility was made in Japan during the Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee meeting so that Giles and Chandler could personally thank Kuroda for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project’s $3 million contribution to this project.

“The Ichthys LNG Project’s joint venture participants are not only contributing to the economy of Darwin and the NT through their involvement in the LNG project, they are contributing to the future educational opportunities for all Territory students,” Giles said.

Chairman Kuroda  reaffirmed that Ichthys Operator INPEX was committed to being a long term member of the Northern Territory community.

“Darwin is very important to the future of INPEX and we are pleased to be able to give back to the local community by contributing to the future educational opportunities for all Northern Territory students,” Kuroda said. “The Ichthys Project has already contributed to the Larrakia Trade Training Centre and CDU’s Northern Australian Centre for Oil and Gas.”

The NTOEC is a senior secondary distance education school catering for years 10 to 12.

It provides a high quality education program covering the full NT Certificate of Education and Training curriculum and Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate courses, offering over 180 subjects to Territory students, most of whom are from remote and regional areas.

“NTOEC provides students from all regions of the NT with access to a wide variety of quality secondary educational opportunities,” Chandler said.

“The Northern Territory Government is happy to partner with INPEX and the Ichthys Project in delivering the new NTOEC facility.”

Currently operating from an office building in Rapid Creek, the NTOEC’s new facility will be located at Darwin High School. While the new facility is designed and constructed the NTOEC and its staff will temporarily relocate to the Nightcliff Middle School at the end of this school year.
