India's Government to Improve National Shipbuilding Strategy

Aiming to improve the current situation in shipbuilding industry in India, the country’s Ministry of Shipping (MoS) announced its plans to bring forward a new policy which would facilitate promotion and development of Indian shipbuilding in the 12th Plan period, Exim India writes.

The said policy is targeted at enabling the country to compete shoulder by shoulder with its counterparts both within the state borders and on international market, the Union Shipping Minister, Mr G. K. Vasann pointed out last week, while addressing the present at the third southern region shipping conclave, organized by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chennai Custom House Agents’ Association.

The focus of the policy would be strengthening of ship repair capacities, research and development facilities along with those intended for commercial shipbuilding, the Minister added.

At present, the country has 21 shipbuilding yards in the country, 13 in the public sector and 8 in the private sector, which due to its know-how and other favorable conditions have a considerable potential of climbing the ladder on global shipbuilding market.
