Jera to build more LNG-fired power plants

Jera of Japan, a joint venture created by Tepco and Chubu Electric, is looking to develop approximately 5,590MW of new thermal power generation capacity.

The world’s largest buyer of the chilled fuel said on Wednesday it has submitted a plan for the fiscal year 2016 to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) that includes replacement of aging thermal power plants currently owned by Tepco.

According to the plan, Jera intends to add approximately 4,290 MW of LNG-fired power generation capacity with another 1,300 MW of new power generation capacity to be fueled by coal.

From the two LNG-powered facilities in Chiba prefecture, the facility at Goi will have a 2,340 MW production capacity from three units, with the second LNG-powered facility at Anegasaki having a 1,950 MW production capacity.

The coal-powered plant at Yokosuka in Kanagawa prefecture will have a 1,300 MW from two units.
