KHI develops new tank for LNG-fueled ships

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has reportedly developed an LNG storage tank for liquefied natural gas-fueled vessels with a capacity five times larger than that of the existing model. 

The storage capacity of the adjustable box-shaped tank ranges from 2,000 cubic meters to 10,000 cubic meters, Nikkei reports. It features dividers that increase the tank’s resistance to turbulence.

In comparison to the adjustable box-shaped tank, the current tanks on LNG-fueled ships are barrel-shaped and have the capacity to hold less than 2,000 cubic meters of the chilled fuel.

KHI is set to commercialize the newly developed storage tank over a one year period with the aim to supply containerships or car carriers used in long-distance shipping.

The Japanese company is expecting the international regulations on emissions of SOx, NOx and carbon dioxide to boost the demand for LNG-fueled vessels as shippers attempt to curb environmental impact.
