Maersk Line Makes to Exclusive List of 30 Inspiring Companies

The Danish Ministry of Business and Growth has included Maersk Line in an exclusive list of 30 companies that aims to inspire others to look beyond the borders.

Denmark is one of the most globalised economies in the world, with exports accounting for 56% of gross domestic product, valued at almost DKK 1 trillion (USD 175 billion) annually, including services.

To secure the country’s future prosperity, the Ministry of Business and Growth commissioned a list of companies as an “Export Canon” to inspire other companies and increase exports.

In collaboration with independent think tank, Monday Morning, the ministry selected 30 companies in eight categories, from a gross list of more than 300 nominees. Maersk Line joins the list in the “born global” category as a prime example of globalisation in practice.

Global strategy and mindset

Since 1904, states the report, Maersk Line has “expanded its shipping concepts from its base in the Danish headquarters, but also through a high degree of delegation to employees abroad, adapted for a global reality.”

A global strategy and a global mindset, inherited from the founder, contribute greatly to explaining how the shipping line has succeeded through the years in adapting to new global trade patterns and keeping competitors abreast; thus, achieving a status as the world’s largest container shipping line with a global market share of 14.5%.

The report further highlights Maersk Line’s strategy of being present in all corners of the globe, its focus on talent development and its tradition of delegating responsibility. Maersk Line is highlighted as the “standard-bearer” in a maritime cluster employing 80,000 people in Denmark and accounting for 24% of the country’s exports.

A successful formula for growth

Chief Operating Officer Morten H. Engelstoft received the honour on behalf of Maersk Line on 4 September, at the launch of the “Export Canon”. He appreciates the recognition of Maersk Line’s contribution to Danish commerce and export.

I am proud of the recognition that Maersk Line has an important role to play in this country, as well as abroad,” says Morten. “We are happy to honour Denmark’s centuries-old maritime heritage by empowering trade, not only in Northern Europe but in the whole world. In Maersk Line we are indeed ‘born global’, and the vision and values instilled by our founder have proven a successful formula for creating opportunities across the globe.
